Ceulanamaesmawr Community Council serves the villages of Tal-y-bont and Bont-goch and the surrounding area in north Ceredigion. The area is located between the foothills of Pumlumon to the east and Cors Fochno to the west. The Council’s name was formed by combining the names of two rivers in the area, the Ceulan and the Maesmawr, which flow into the Eleri, the main river that flows through Ceulanamaesmawr.

The village of Tal-y-bont grew to be a thriving industrial centre during the middle of the nineteenth century when a number of woollen mills were established on the banks of the rivers and with the sinking of numerous lead mines by capitalist entrepreneurs in the surrounding valleys and hills and after the advent of enterprising capitalists, a large number of lead mines were opened in the surrounding valleys and hills. By the middle of the twentieth century these traditional industries had all but disappeared

Although the percentage of the population who speak Welsh has declined since the 1950s, the Welsh language remains a vibrant language in the community and is the language of communication for most local organisations, including the Community Council. 

This is a beautiful rural area that was once home to historic lead mines and flourishing woollen mills. The rivers Ceulan and Eleri flow through the community and it forms part of the Dyfi Biosphere area. The area’s numerous public footpaths are popular with residents and visitors.

Agriculture is the main industry in the area, but many of the residents work for employers in Aberystwyth and beyond. The area’s biggest business is Y Lolfa Press. There is a thriving Primary School (Ysgol Gymunedol Tal-y-bont), Cylch Meithrin and Cylch Ti a Fi here and the businesses that serve the area include the village shop, garage, pharmacy, hairdressing salon, café and two pubs. There are two  nonconformist chapels in Tal-y-bont and a church in Bont-goch, and Tal-y-bont Memorial Hall is the largest village hall in Ceredigion. There are also around 25 successful family farms in the area, and renowned agricultural activities such as the annual Show and the Young Farmers Club.
